Where it comes from
Abhyanga comes from Ayurveda, India's traditional system of wellbeing, where daily self-massage with warm oil is part of looking after the body. In a spa it becomes a full ritual: a generous amount of warm oil, a steady rhythm and a therapist's hands from head to feet.
How it feels
Warm, smooth and unhurried. The pressure is medium, and the strokes follow a rhythm that many guests find almost hypnotic. Because more oil is used than in other massages, your skin drinks it in; most guests leave with skin that feels soft for days.
Good to know before you book
- Wear something you don't mind getting a little oily on the way home, or shower after; we have showers and toiletries at every location.
- Tell us about any skin allergies or sensitivities, and about nut allergies, as some oils are made with nut oils.
- Pair it with the Herbal Poultice, warm herbal pouches pressed along the body, when you want something deeper and more traditional.
After your session
Leave the oil on for a while if you can; a warm shower later in the day is enough. Drink some water, eat lightly and, if possible, keep the evening slow.
